French Parliament Rejects No-Confidence Vote Against Government

Motion DeCensure TransPartisane

"Majority necessary: 287 appointees. To be adopted: 278. "The motion of censure is not adopted because the required majority was not achieved," President Yal Braun-Pivet said from the national assembly on March 20. The pension reform text is therefore adopted because the government will not collapse. This parliamentary shuffle, for which the deputies will not have cast a vote due to the application of article 49.3 of the constitution, comes to an end with the rejection of the censure motion.

When the government censored, a gap of approximately fifteen votes was anticipated, but it was reduced to only nine votes. What political repercussions does this result have? What reaction will the opposition have in the Assembly and on the street? We directly addressed members of the South West with these inquiries. Vincent Bru, a deputy for the Pyrénées-Atlantiques and a member of the MoDem majority, said he was, for lack of a better word, "satisfied" with the text that was adopted this evening. Support for the government, still accompanied by a "review clause" requiring improvements to be made by 2027:

On Monday, the cross-party censure motion was approved with participation from National Rally deputy for the Dordogne, Serge Muller. He laments the result of this first vote. The few votes needed to pass the censure motion are noted by Iki Echaniz, NUPES deputy for the Pyrénées Atlantiques. He has already proposed a strategy for the future. When the motion was deemed unconstitutional, the Nupes deputies' placards floated in the Assembly's ranks. Three characters: RIP. " We have filed a shared initiative referendum to continue the conflict

. "Inaki Echaniz also evokes another strategy to prevent this law from being applied:" We are also submitting an appeal to the Constitutional Council because this text does not appear to be valid. "Boris Vallaud, Member of Parliament for Landes" The Member of Parliament for Landes defended the cross-party censure motion several times:

From the assembly's podium, he wrote to Elisabeth Borne, "To sow misery, Madam Minister, you reap anger, whatever the cost to democracy." He believes that the battle is not over despite the rejection of the censure motion. Sébastien Peytavie, Dordogne NUPES deputy The Sarlat NUPES deputy had previously indicated that he would support the motion for censure.

Twitter reveals what went on behind the scenes during this particular Assembly vote: The deputies can only vote for the mention, which is carried out in adjacent rooms of the Bourbon Palace. Abstainers and those who vote against are simply ignored. The government must be overthrown with 287 votes.
