Autistic teen brutally attacked on NYC subway platform in possible hate crime

An autistic teen who was brutally beaten on a subway platform last week has been taken into custody by New York City police officers.

A 14-year-old male was arrested on charges of aggravated harassment, assault, and menacing on Tuesday around 12:05 p.m., according to the NYPD. The 15-year-old male victim was approached by three unidentified individuals at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Friday inside the West 181 Street and Washington Avenue subway station. His identity has not been released. The teen was said to have been escorted onto the northbound platform by the individuals, according to the police.

According to the FBI, hate crime is at its highest levels in decades. The assailants, according to police, hurled racial slurs at the victim before hitting him multiple times on the head and body, according to the report. A video of the brutal beating shows no one intervening to help the teen.

The victim, whose identity has not been made public, was in pain and had his lip lacerated. The beating had also broken his glasses. The teen was said to be a member of the "Transit Kids," a group of kids with developmental disabilities who enjoy riding trains and rallied against bullying and racism on Tuesday.
