Politico White House bureau chief Jonathan Lemire wrote that President Joe Biden “has made a deal a priority throughout the debt ceiling talks. But because of Republican intransigence, Biden is changing tack.”
what is hell What is he talking about, you might wonder. Just last month, Lemire’s publication reported that Biden was “pleased” to meet with California House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, but “did not discuss whether the debt ceiling would be extended. it’s non-negotiable(The italics are mine.) That doesn’t sound like someone who would “prioritize the deal” on the debt ceiling.
Back in January, press secretary Karin Jean-Pierre made it clear that “we will not have any negotiations on the debt ceiling”. On April 27, The Washington Post reported that “As pressure mounts, White House reiterates its refusal to negotiate debt ceiling.”
Biden’s position is widely known and defended. Democrats, including Dan Pfeiffer, an adviser to former President Barack Obama, have laid out why Biden should not negotiate with McCarthy in a series of op-eds. Left-handed journalist Ronald Brownstein tried to rationalize “Biden’s logic in refusing to negotiate the debt ceiling”—not so long ago, it was called “obstructionism” or “nihilism.”
Back in February, McCarthy invited Biden to sit down. The president has been promising he won’t negotiate, presumably to put pressure on a potentially devastating default by scaremongering voters. That is Biden’s prerogative.
Yet, as Lemire would have you believe, the idea that the president has shown an “unwillingness to play tough” is a complete myth. Biden is no Henry Clay. This is a president who has no qualms about abusing executive power — even now, he threatens to use the 14th Amendment to pay down debt with an unconstitutional plan. The president recently rushed through the most expensive reform bill in history, using a settlement and not getting a single vote from Republicans.
